Zen Remedies Allergy Treatment Plan

Written by Dr. Bill Almon,

It’s allergy season.  If you suffer from what we in the medical profession call “seasonal allergies”, then you already know that. From the moment the first tender shoots begin to appear on the tips of green growing things in the spring, through the first hard frost in late fall, your body fights a running battle with whatever variety of pollen is blowing through your neighborhood.

Pollen, in general is a good thing. Pollen is an essential thing. Pollen is part of the miracle of life and a part of the reproductive cycle of plants without which Spring would not be as colorful, and our plates would be empty. Pollen is how one plant finds another plant to make new plants.

But, the truth is, that your body doesn’t like pollen.  And when pollen finds us, which it always does, the result isn’t so wonderful. In fact the result is all out war.

Your body’s ability to protect you is also a good thing. And like pollen it is also an essential thing. We call that protective network your immune system, and if it is working right, your body uses it’s immune system to protect you from harmful assaults from the outside world.  Whether it is something as small as a foreign protein molecule to something as large as a splinter, or even gigantic, like an artificial joint or a transplanted organ, your immune system is every vigilante to protect you. And the first step in how it does this, is by distinguishing what is you, from what isn’t you…what is harmful to you, from what is good for you.

Each plant, makes millions and millions of pollen particles, which it releases into the air to be carried far and wide by the wind in its quest for another plant of the same species so that the it can reproduce itself for another generation. Very few of those pollen particles actually reach their intended targets. And when they reach our sinuses instead the results can make us miserable. Your immune system reacts to this invasion of pollen by launching an all out defensive response designed to protect you.  White cells mobilize, antibodies are made, chemicals are released, the invading foreign pollen is neutralized.  All in all the  process, you feel miserable.

Sneezing, feverishness, and achiness….that’s your body fighting off pollen. Watery, scratchy eyes…more immune response. Stuffy, runny nose…your body protecting you.  Is it any wonder that in the middle of such an all out war on pollen that your body feels like a battle field?

So what do you do about it?

Helpful Tips and Natural Remedies for Allergy Treatment

How do you let your healthy body do what it is supposed to do and still feel well enough to get up and go to work in the morning?
We can’t make plants stop pollinating. Nor, would we want to.

Plus, you certainly don’t want to turn off your body’s immune defenses. The same defense system that is causing you the miserable symptoms of hay fever is also constantly vigilant to protect you from serious life threatening infections.

The answer to this allergy treatment dilemma for the most part is simply common sense.  Below are some helpful tips and natural remedies that will help with “seasonal allergies”

1 – Keeping your immune system and the offending pollen apart from one another is a basic step. No one can isolate themselves entirely from the outside environment, and fortunately most people are not sensitive to all pollens. But on days when pollen that you are sensitive to is in the air, try to stay indoors as much as possible with the windows shut and the air conditioner on.

2 – Staying well hydrated and rested will help your body feel better overall, and help it to recover more quickly from the effects of its immune response battle with pollen.

3 – Eat a healthy diet that includes appropriate supplements to replace lost nutrients and that takes advantage of the anti-inflammatory effects of Omega-3 fatty acids.

4 – Avoid over exertion, especially outdoors when the pollen count is high or the overall air quality is poor.

5 – Be careful about overusing prescription or over the counter allergy and cold medicines. Antihistamines and decongestants, while providing relief from some allergy symptoms, may be counterproductive by causing excessive drying of the mucous membranes of the sinuses, airways, and eyes. In addition they often have unwanted side effects, such as daytime drowsiness, sleeplessness at night, increases in blood pressure and heart rate and in some people difficulty with urination.

6 – Try to modulate your immune response gently. We don’t want our bodies immune system to stop protecting us, we simply want it to not react so vigorously to pollen.
Steroid containing medications and nasal spray, while of great benefit in cases of life threatening allergic responses and asthma, are usually not needed and can be harmful when used for “hay fever”. High quality natural and homeopathic remedies, on the other hand, can be of great benefit in helping to lessen the symptoms of seasonal allergies, while avoiding harsh side effects and allowing your immune system to remain vigilante for true threats to your health.
